Abstract

The clinical experience in the use of CIALIS is limited and, therefore, the therapeutic effect should not be ascribed to its effect on the patient.

Patients with a history of hypertension should not use CIALIS with nitrates because they may increase the risk of stroke and cardiac events. Patients with hypertension should use an oral CIALIS tablet at the lowest possible dose and should be advised to take a daily CIALIS tablet as recommended by the manufacturer. This is the dose that is most often used.

The manufacturer recommends that CIALIS be used for up to 10 days after a patient has taken nitrates.

CIALIS is a brand name for the medicinal product NOVITRATE (Oral Controlled Oral Controlled Oral Drug) marketed under the brand name Cialis. It is available in the following forms: tablets, oral solution, ointment, oral granules, and ointment containing 5% glycerol. The brand name NOVITRATE (Oral Controlled Oral Drug) has been discontinued as of 30 June 1998.

The following are available in the form of oral solutions and granules.

Active ingredient

CIALIS is the active ingredient of NOVITRATE (Oral Controlled Oral Drug). It is also the active ingredient of CIALIS (the other inactive ingredients are not disclosed in this disclosure).

Dosage form

Tablets: 5% (containing 5% glycerol), 25% (containing 25% glycerol), 50% (containing 50% glycerol), 100% (containing 100% glycerol), 200% (containing 200% glycerol), 400% (containing 400% glycerol), and 5% (containing 5% glycerol).

Oral solution: 5 ml (containing 5% glycerol) and 10 ml (containing 10% glycerol). Oral granules: 5 ml.

Directions for use

For the oral solution: The recommended dose of the oral solution is 5 mg (1 tablet) taken once daily with a maximum daily dose of 10 mg (2 tablets). The recommended dose of the oral granules is 2.5 mg (1 tablet) taken once daily with a maximum daily dose of 5 mg (2 tablets).

Cautions

For patients with cardiovascular disease (as well as a history of hypertension) the dose is recommended to be increased to a maximum of 20 mg once daily. Patients with a history of heart attack, stroke, or arrhythmias, patients with severe hepatic dysfunction, or patients with serious renal impairment are not recommended to use CIALIS. Patients with a history of seizures should be advised not to use CIALIS and should not use NOVITRATE. Patients with a history of seizures and/or a history of drug abuse, for example alcohol or tobacco, are not recommended to use CIALIS. Patients with severe hepatic impairment should not be recommended to use CIALIS.

CIALIS is not indicated for patients with liver disease. Patients with severe renal impairment should be advised not to use CIALIS. Patients with a history of hepatic dysfunction, and patients with a history of drug abuse, for example alcohol or tobacco, are not recommended to use CIALIS.

For patients with a history of hypertension the recommended dose is 10 mg taken once daily with a maximum daily dose of 20 mg (2 tablets). The recommended dose of the oral solution is 2.5 mg (1 tablet) taken once daily with a maximum daily dose of 5 mg (2 tablets).

Adverse reactions

The following adverse reactions have been reported in association with the use of NOVITRATE in patients with hypertension.
